The Project: Video of 1000 Faces Mask Theater's live performance Sept. 11, 2021 at Pen Druid Brewing, Sperryville, Va.
The Client: 1000 Faces Mask Theater
Details: We last did this in 2019, inside a cavernous and rather dark Castleton Festival Tent, which made lighting a challenge. After a pandemic year off, company founder Peggy Schadler wanted to do the new show outdoors. Thus the "stage" was on a grassy knoll adjacent to Pen Druid Brewing in Sperryville, Va. — with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, and the sun setting just to the right of the performance area (so, yes, a different sort of lighting challenge). It was a beautiful fall day, with a record crowd in chairs and blankets on the grass, and it helped a lot that Luke and I had done this before (and knew we needed at least three cameras). Peggy's masks and her play, "The Axis Mundi Traveling Medicine Show," were wonderful as always, the band was terrific (and incredibly well-recorded by Jeff Wolf of Stillwaters Studios in Marshall), and we'd happily do this every year if Peggy will have us.
