The Art of Cranky

The Project: Four short recordings of crankies (moving panoramas) that tell folk tales through music and handmade art.

The Client: John Hallberg

Details: Performed in Rappahannock County, Va., most of these crankies, and the videos made of them, were made possible by a grant from the Claudia Mitchell Arts Fund of the Rappahannock Association for Art and Community. These four feature vocals and narration by John Hallberg, with artwork by Palmer Smith, artwork and cranky operation (which involves turning the cranks on the two spools that move the backlit background) by Linda Heimstra, and artwork and shadow puppet manipulation by Llani Abernathy. Shot by Luke Christopher, edited by Roger Piantadosi.
